43 x 35 x 35 cms, paper-clay, polyurethane, acrylic and resin, 2021 (sold)
During the pandemic, I found myself inspired by the events unfolding around us. It was a time of great uncertainty, and my work at the time was an attempt to make sense of the shifting landscape. We were all feeling the weight of this restrictive period, where our bodies were held captive, and we were forced to conform and comply. It was an uncomfortable and unfamiliar time, and we were all coming to terms with change.
The work was created using a combination of polyurethane, paperclay, resin and acrylic. I created layers within the structure, manipulating them at critical points before fixing them in their final form. The polyurethane medium I used to create the work was highly volatile, and there was this continuous resolve whilst making the work to get it under control. The process itself was unpredictable, adding a layer of meaning to the piece.
As I worked, I was struck by the parallels between the creative process and the more extensive societal changes taking place. Like the world around us, the work was constantly in motion, evolving and transforming as each layer was added. I wanted the work, whilst dealing with ideas of limited movement, to still convey a sense of motion, reflecting on the idea of renewal and change in the face of adversity..
